CRESCENZI HOUSE

CASA DEI CRESCENZI
1040/65 or maybe late eleventh century
Built with old materials by Nicolò di Crescenzio to guard the ford of the Tiber
One of the rare early medieval residential buildings still extant in Rome
Abandoned in the fifteenth century and later used as a stable
"Probably the spirit that led to the establishment of the republic in 1143 had been living among the scholars and intellectuals for a long time before it materialized into political action. The revival of antiquity and the related political implications were stimulated by knowledge of the classical writers and reflected in the literary forms as well as visual ones" (Richard Krautheimer)
