MANILI HOUSE

CASA DEI MANILI
Rebuilt in 1468 for Lorenzo Manili
FAƇADE
Imitations of Roman fonts and classical epigraphic fragments including "Lion strikes a deer" and "Greek Stele with two dogs"
A plaque indicates curiously the date 2221 corresponding to 1468 calculated ab Urbe condita, from the year of the foundation of Rome (753 BC), to underline the humanistic interest of the owner
It probably corresponds to the site of the TEMPLE OF NEPTUNE in the Circus Flaminius, in which the Altar of Domitius Aenobarbus was. On this altar there were: "Ludovisi Ares" (Achilles, in fact) now in Palazzo Altemps, "Thetis" now in Palazzo Massimo and the "Reliefs from the Altar of Domitius Aenobarbus" now in the Louvre and in the Glyptothek in Munich
